Skiff Mail belongs in this audit as a defunct cautionary tale. While it operated it was a genuinely private, end-to-end-encrypted suite spanning mail, calendar, pages and drive, and it was well regarded by privacy-conscious users. The encryption was not the problem.
The problem was ownership. Notion acquired Skiff in February 2024, and by 9 August 2024 all Skiff services were sunset, with users given a window to migrate their data out before losing access. A product that had asked people to trust it with their most private communications simply wound down on a deadline once it was bought. The sequel underlines the point: Notion Mail, the successor product, is itself now scheduled to shut down, disrupting former Skiff users a second time.
